and rides. Time trials and some race events are listed. In the future,
we would like to expand our list of walking & running events as well.

May
is National Bike Safety month and the week of May 13 is National Bike
Safety Week. Across the country, Rides of Silence will be held to honor
all those who have been killed or injured by motorists while riding
their bicycles. Rides of Silence are slow paced rides of approximately
12 miles in length that are done in complete silence. VBPC Executive
Director Nancy Schulz will lead a Montpelier Ride of Silence on Friday,
May 18 at 7:00 pm. Participants are asked to gather on State Street
in front of the statehouse. Riders are encouraged to wear a black arm
band in honor of a cyclist who has been killed and a red arm band in
honor of a cyclist who has been injured. Organizers of the Rides of
Silence want to draw attention to the importance of Sharing the Road.

Meet
at the Vermont Law School parking lot. Join Coalition board members
Will Flender and Kathy Davidow on a leisurely paced tour of the scenic
but hilly dirt roads of South Royalton and East Barnard. All levels
of cyclists are invited to join in this fun ride which will include
some long downhill cruises and challenging uphill climbs. Riders gain
approximately 1,000 feet of elevation before descending back to South
Royalton. The route predominately follows dirt roads, which are sufficiently
hard packed to accommodate road bikes.
Directions: From the intersection of Vermont Routes 110 and 14, proceed
across the White River on Chelsea Street. Take the first left into the
Vermont Law School parking lot.

first of an annual tour, choose between 15, 26, 51, 77 or 95 mile loops
in the beautiful Northeast Kingdom. Registration fee is $20 before June
10th and $25 thereafter. IROC is asking for a $25 or more pledge on

Scenic
100 km ride around Central Vermont starts @ 9 a.m.; 30/50 km start @
10 a.m. This tour is a biking/walking/running fundraising event to benefit
homeless youth in Central Vermont and orphaned youth in Moscow, Russia
as well as an opportunity to enjoy beautiful Vermont scenery from your
bike. A variety of courses will accommodate many riding abilities on
scenic dirt roads, and trails at the Morse Farm Ski Touring Center will
be available for walkers & runners. There will be food and games

VBPC's
board member Tom Jones has mapped out one of his favorite work-out rides
with two options: 22 miles or 38 miles. The choice can be made near
the 20 mile mark.
Start at Esterbrook Park just North of Brandon on Route 7. Take mostly
secondary roads up to and around Lake Dunmore, on to Forest Dale, and
then Brandon via Park Street to avoid Route 73 traffic. In Brandon the
choice can be made to return to the car at Esterbrook Park or to ride
along Otter Creek to Whiting and then return to the Park. The roads
are in farely good shape and several of the bad ones were repaved last
summer.

The
Bike Ferry will be crossing the cut August weekends 10-6 as last year.
Local Motion is also offering the Bike Ferry for charter service this
year - $150/hr, including a licensed Captain. Capacity is six passengers
with bikes. They'll go anywhere, but will try to focus on connecting
trail-related destinations: Marble Island to South Hero, interpretive
tours of the Winooski River from the Ethan Allen Homestead are two examples
of routes that will be promoted.

Join
VBPC board member Kathy Davidow on a ride in Bradford on Saturday, Aug
11th. Meet at 9:30 at the park and ride on Rt 25 off the I91 exit in
Bradford. The ride is between 35-40 miles. It's moderately hilly, with
low traffic. The route will ride from Bradford over a back road to Lake
Morey, around the lake along route 5 and turn up 244 to ride by Lake
Fairlee then 113 to Vershire and back to Bradford. The ride is quiet
with possible swimming stops at both lakes and stores for snacks and
picnic spots along the way.

Maple Onion is an event for the whole family. Race on a challenging
course at the beautiful Morse Farm in Montpelier, Vermont. The course

The
Upper Valley Trails Alliance presents
a progressive picnic by bicycle along roads through Thetford, Lyme,
Orford and Fairlee. The 16 mile, easy to moderate loop, which participants
travel at their own pace, proceeds over rolling hills and along the
Connecticut River with several stops along the way (Cedar Circle Farm,
Longwind Farm, Inc., River Valley Farm, Boldo's, the Whippi Dip, and
others) to sample local produce and other foods. Participants must bring
their own bike and helmet; those under 12 years of age must be accompanied
by and ride with an adult. Donation: $15 per person, $8 under 12; includes
all food as well as maps and directions. A support van with a mechanic
will be available during the ride; water and facilities available at
each stop. Pre-registration required no later than August 30. Details

Saturday, September 15, at the Bolton Valley Resort, members and friends
will gather to enjoy the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition’s
first annual outing. This daylong event will feature a variety of guided
bicycle rides and Nordic walks along with
delicious food and informative exhibits. Rides and
walks will be easy, moderate, and challenging so there will be options
to accommodate a range of preferences. Throughout the day, there will
be opportunities to get to know fellow members and participate in a
Nordic Walking Festival, including an option to become a certified Nordic
Walking instructor. The Coalition will preview some of its plans for
2008 and will acknowledge volunteers who have contributed to the VBPC’s
success in the past year. Sponsors of this event so far include: Blue
Cross/Blue Shield, Battenkill Sports, the Trapp Family Lodge, Onion
River Sports, SkiRack and Exel Sports. Co-organizers include the Vermont
Department of Health, the Central Vermont Medical Center, and Community
Connections. The free buffet lunch will be limited
to the first 200 respondents, so please reserve now to guarantee your
