VTrans has budgeted money to initiate a study of the overall economic and environmental benefits of bicycling and walking. This study is a recommended strategic action in the 2008 Vermont Pedestrian and Bicycle Policy Plan (http://www.aot.state.vt.us/planning/PBPP.htm). Especially given the tough financial times we find ourselves in, this study will make the case that investments in bicycling and walking have great paybacks. Traditional economic studies of bicycling have focused on the economic impact of tourism. The proposed study will broaden the focus to include environmental benefits, impact on real estate values, health benefits, reduced demand on the transportation system and other direct, secondary and spin-off benefits of non-motorized travel.  It is hoped that a request for proposals could hit the streets some time this spring, with the study beginning in the summer or fall. It is anticipated that the study might be concluded by the end of 2010.
