A group of students at Montpelier High School are the latest partners in the StoryWalk®. Project, which combines literacy and physical fitness by posting pages of children’s books along trails and paths. The students are members of teacher Ellen Sholk’s Spanish language class. As a community service initiative, each student volunteer took a page from the book “A Hat for Minerva Louise” and translated the page into Spanish. The text of the book involves a variety of moods and tenses and presented challenges for the translators. Happily, the translation was completed prior to Montpelier’s First Night festivities and the book was installed in the snow along Main Street for children and adults to enjoy that afternoon. Ellen Sholk arranged a classroom celebration, complete with refreshments, the wearing of “sombreros” and the participation of Matt McLane, community service coordinator for the high school, Anne Ferguson, StoryWalk’s creator, and Nancy Schulz, director of the Coalition. The Coalition appreciates the effort and enthusiasm of the staff and students of Montpelier High. “Minerva Louise” in Spanish joins “Gossie”, a title available in French translation. Anne, Nancy, and Rachel Senechal from the Kellogg Hubbard Library plan to expand the collection of foreign language books. If you have a suggestion for a children’s book that would be an excellent candidate for translation, please send your idea to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
